An afternoon of hiking with an experienced mountain guide with a backpack full of local stories.
The locals say that no other road crossing Slovenia’s borders is as steep as the road leading across the Ljubelj Pass. Ever since the area was first inhabited, a north-bound route has led through here, crossing the Karavanke Alps. At the top of the pass, 1,369 meters above sea level, you will take a break in the Ljubelj Mountain Hut, and then continue your beautiful hike. One foot in Slovenia and the other in Austria, you will follow the ridge toward Korošica, one of the most remote and magical mountain pastures in the Karavanke Alps.
Lush mountain meadows are a paradise for animals in the summer, while visitors get to appreciate breathtaking views amidst rich Alpine flora and enjoy traditional Ajdovi Žganci buckwheat porridge with sour milk. You will return to the valley along a path leading under vast screes on the north-eastern slopes of Košuta Mountain, the place where according to legend a dragon hatched from a rooster’s egg. If you wish, you can expand your tour with a guided visit of the Šentan Mine, a climb to Košutnica Mountain, and dinner at the excellent inn Gostišče Karavla 297.
