Caring for cheese-making tradition, homegrown food for guests, and planting resilient trees in the park – these are three practices that deserve recognition and should serve as inspiration for all of us. Remember Slovenia Green certified providers the next time you’re looking for an idea for a trip or holiday in Slovenia.

Škvor Homestead: The cheese-making tradition of knowledge and flavors

Robidišče, a tiny village with barely 18 inhabitants, once had a strong cheese-making tradition. Thanks only to the Škvor homestead, which three years ago joined the Ljubinj grazing community and once again took cows to pasture in the mountains, today guests in the village once more have the opportunity to taste homemade cheese, cottage cheese, and abriblne. Staša from the homestead goes to the mountain pasture with her children, where they all participate in milking and cheese-making, thereby passing on knowledge, values, and flavors to the local environment that would otherwise disappear. Their products received the Soča Valley quality label in 2023. And you don’t know what abriblni are? You’ll just have to try them! Now you know where to go.

Šenk Homestead: Organic food production for guests

It hardly gets more homemade than at the Šenk family’s place. They raise their own animals and grow most of their vegetables in three greenhouses (the farm stands at 900 meters above sea level!). For guests, they produce and process more than 75 percent of the food they serve, everything except grains and dairy products. But even the milk comes from the village, from another organic farm in Jezersko, and they themselves make cottage cheese and yogurts. Likewise, part of the flour comes organically from Jezersko. There is enough to provide healthy and delicious breakfasts and dinners every day of the summer season for about 30 guests. This way of working is beneficial for the environment in many ways: because they do not use pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers, the local soil and water are grateful. There is hardly any packaging, nor transportation costs. And everyone, both guests and hosts, by taking care of their own health, do not burden the healthcare system. This is how it should be everywhere!

Thermana d.d.: Planting green trees of the future

Since its creation nearly 170 years ago, the spa park in Laško has been a place for relaxation and socializing in nature. Not only because many of their guests walk through the park, but also because of their general concern for a healthy local environment, Thermana and its partners planted the trees of the future in the park. With the help of experts, they planted tree species more resistant to climate change, which will provide a pleasant environment for generations to come. One of the partners is the Goran Dragić Foundation, which organizes a basketball camp for young athletes in Thermana.
