The Drvošec trail – Walk through our special piece of the world
Notranjska Regional Park is a special piece of the world where nature and humans meet in harmony. The park covers the area of the intermittent Lake Cerknica, one of the most famous karst phenomena in Europe, which seasonally transforms from an extensive wetland to a karst field. More than 300 species of birds find their home here. This biodiverse landscape is also part of the Natura 2000 network due to its unique natural value.
In the heart of the mystical karst landscape of Lake Cerknica lies the thematic Drvošec trail. In 2020, the trail received the title of the BEST thematic trail awarded by the Slovenian Tourist Association. This is not just an ordinary hiking trail but an open-air classroom where visitors learn about the karst world and its peculiarities. Besides natural beauty, the Drvošec trail also offers insight into the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Start your adventure
The Drvošec trail begins at the Visitor center Lake Cerknica in Dolenje Jezero near Cerknica. Visitors are encouraged to first explore the interactive exhibition at the Center about the karst phenomenon of the intermittent lake, which has fascinated scientists, visitors, and locals for centuries. The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to learn about the lake’s hydrology, its environmental significance, and the area’s rich cultural heritage. There, you can pick up a trail map with all marked points and information.

The thematic trail is suitable for all generations, including families with young children.
Follow the bittern bird signs
The Drvošec trail takes you through the karst landscape. At the beginning, the bittern bird sign leads you along a gravel path that continues into the forest. Along the way, you will find informative boards that introduce you to the natural features and animal species you may encounter.
The trail is carefully maintained and includes observation platforms where you can watch birds and other animals with binoculars. One of the special features is the silhouettes of wild animals in their natural sizes, which particularly attract children’s curiosity.
Observation tower and bird paradise
One of the highlights of the trail is the 10-meter observation tower, offering an exceptional view of lake Cerknica and the surrounding landscape. The tower is an ideal spot to observe the seasonal changes of the lake, which transforms from a wetland to a karst field.
Birdwatching enthusiasts will not be disappointed, as nearly half of all European bird species live here, including rare and endangered species like the bittern. So, bring your binoculars, as you are sure to spot herons, ducks, and other birds rarely seen in Europe.

More than 300 species of birds find their home at Lake Cerknica.
Practical information
The hike is suitable for all generations, from families with young children to recreational hikers and nature lovers. Parking for visitors is available at the Lake Cerknica Visitor Center in Dolenje Jezero. You can also reach the starting point on foot or by bike from Cerknica, where there are marked walking and cycling paths.
