The tunnels under the old town of Kranj lie hidden beneath the historic city center and were built during World War II to serve as a municipal bomb shelter. The 1300-meter-long route leads through Kranj’s conglomerate rock. The tunnels were dug by humans, but due to a climate similar to that of a natural cave, stalactites form there now and rare cave animals (cave crickets, large orb-weavers) live in them.
When they were opened for the public, the tunnels received an award for creative and innovative achievements in Slovenian tourism – the Silver Sejalec.
Since December 2024, the tunnels have the Green Key environmental label, which confirms their commitment to the development of responsible tourism and sustainable attitude towards the environment. We encourage visitors to choose sustainable modes of transportation.
