Žirovnica

0% GREEN Kaj to pomeni?

Žirovnica lies in a green valley on the edge of the Karavanke Mountains, where forests fringe fragrant meadows. It’s rich literary, beekeeping and archaeological heritage is an inexhaustible source of ever-new experiences and wonderful stories. You will find them everywhere – on the mountain paths and mountain meadows that lie in the Natura 2000 protected area, in the mysterious village at the top of Ajdna, guarded by giants, in the birth houses where the greatest pen masters in Slovenia were born and created.

Discover the rich beekeeping tradition at the Anton Janša apiary, named after the pioneer of modern Slovenian beekeeping. As you explore, take a refreshing break at the village troughs, where you can fill up with fresh drinking water, which is especially welcomed if you are walking the 10-kilometre circular Žirovnica Cultural Heritage Trail, or hiking to the viewpoint at Lovrenc, or enjoying a nice walk in the Završnica Valley.

When in Žirovnica, be sure to live, work and play like the locals do. What does that mean in practice? Find out by reading the charming tips for the best experience of the destination. Take home some honey from local beekeepers or a bottle of genuine craft beer, and during your visit, don’t miss the traditional dishes served in the mountain huts and village inns.
