An Evening of Flavours in the Heart of Krško
September evenings in the Posavje region have a special charm. As summer slowly fades and vineyards begin to take on autumn colours, the old town centre of Krško transforms for one evening into a vibrant street of flavours, aromas and friendly gatherings. This is how I experienced the Street Food Festival – Taste Posavje last year, one of the most recognisable gastronomic events in the region.
When I arrived just before five in the afternoon, the old town was already filled with anticipation. Stalls were being prepared, winemakers were pouring wine, and chefs in open kitchens were plating their first dishes. Visitors gathered gradually, and the street came alive with the unmistakable rhythm of a festival evening.

Visitors gather between the food and wine stalls as the festival gets underway.
The idea behind the festival is simple yet powerful
To present the very best of Posavje. Under the slogan FRESH – TASTY – LOCAL, winemakers, brewers, restaurateurs and local producers come together to offer dishes and drinks made from regional ingredients.
As I wandered among the stalls, I immediately noticed the diversity of Posavje cuisine. In one place you can taste elegant wines from local vineyards, and just a few steps away discover modern interpretations of traditional dishes.
Among the participating providers were members of the Taste Posavje brand, including Kerin Winery, Dular Wines, Jelenič Wines, Klet Krško, Albiana, Kunej Wine & Chocolate, Reset Brewery, Gostilna Kunst, Restaurant A3 and Pri Martinovih Tourist Farm. Visitors were also excited to meet two contestants from MasterChef Slovenia – Natalija Sebanc and Jure Kirbiš.

Local producers at Taste Posavje include winemakers, restaurants and Reset Brewery, the region’s local craft brewery.
All providers share the same philosophy
Creating food and drinks from local, seasonal and high-quality ingredients that reflect the character of the region. On festival plates and in glasses you find products from Posavje’s fields, vineyards, orchards and forests. Chefs often emphasise that close cooperation with local producers ensures freshness and authenticity.
One of the most distinctive ingredients of Posavje cuisine is the Krškopolje pig, the only preserved indigenous Slovenian pig breed. Once raised on nearly every farm, it has become a symbol of local gastronomy and sustainable farming. Its meat is valued for its rich flavour and marbling, which gives dishes exceptional tenderness. At the festival, it appears in modern interpretations of traditional recipes.
Sweet treats also play an important role. One of the most popular stops was the pastry shop Sladka zapeljivost (Sweet Temptation), known for combining classic recipes with modern techniques and local ingredients such as fruit, honey and walnuts. Their display cases were filled with colourful cakes and creamy desserts – a perfect finale to the evening.

Festival dishes are prepared with ingredients from Posavje, including local meat, fruit, honey and walnuts.
Another important chapter of the Posavje story belongs to sparkling wines
The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when Trappist monks at nearby Rajhenburg Castle introduced their production using the traditional method. Their knowledge laid the foundation for today’s high-quality sparkling wines in the region.
Today winemakers from Posavje and neighbouring Dolenjska continue this tradition, producing sparkling wines known for their freshness, elegant acidity and minerality. Thanks to local soil and climate, these wines have a distinctive character and pair beautifully with a wide range of dishes.
Walking between the stalls is not just a gastronomic experience but also an opportunity to discover the stories behind each product. Every winemaker, chef and producer brings a piece of Posavje with them – a region where tradition and modern culinary creativity intertwine.
At a festival like this, it is almost impossible to decide where to begin. I started with still wines and later moved on to sparkling ones. Posavje is one of Slovenia’s oldest wine-growing regions, and listening to winemakers quickly reveals why their wines are so distinctive. They are particularly proud of indigenous grape varieties such as Rumeni Plavec and Modra Frankinja.
At the region’s only brewery, I tasted excellent craft beers brewed by a young local team. I then continued with a variety of dishes – from inventive plates by local restaurants to sweet creations from the pastry stalls. Instead of formal dining, the festival offers small culinary stories that visitors can explore while strolling along the street.

Posavje’s wine tradition ranges from local still wines to sparkling wines made using the traditional method.
Sustainability is another key feature of the festival
Wine glasses are provided through a deposit system, reducing waste, and visitors are encouraged to separate waste at eco-points. The organisers show that even large events can be environmentally responsible, as all providers use sustainable packaging.
As evening turned into night, the atmosphere became even more vibrant. The band Funk Parker filled the street with music, while a DJ kept the energy alive until late in the evening. People raised their glasses, discovered new dishes and enjoyed the relaxed rhythm of the town.
What truly makes the festival special, however, is not only the food and wine, but the people – the hosts who proudly present their products, the visitors who come from across Slovenia, and travellers who discover Posavje through its flavours.
The Street Food Festival – Taste Posavje is, in essence, a story about the region
About its people, its tradition and its modern gastronomy.
As the first September evenings descend over Krško once again, the streets of the old town will come alive with the flavours of Posavje. If you wish to experience the region through its tastes, people and stories, mark 4 September 2026 in your calendar. The festival will return to the old town, inviting visitors to an evening of local culinary delights, excellent wines and vibrant city atmosphere, complemented by the music of Cherry Wine.
