Jurjevanje in Slovenske Konjice: From Legend to Authentic Local Experiences
In Slovenske Konjice, cafés along the murmuring stream and the Dravinja River come to life, and the air is filled with anticipation for a beloved traditional event.
Jurjevanje in Slovenske Konjice brings together locals and visitors, children and seniors, creators and musicians — everyone who enjoys authentic local flavours. Dedicated to Saint George, the town’s patron saint, the festival has a tradition of more than twenty years. This year, the legend of the fearsome Konjice dragon will once again come alive on Saturday, 25 April, connecting past and present in a truly joining experience.

A decade ago, the event was enriched by St George’s Craft and Culinary Fair, which connects local food producers, artisans, and restaurateurs with creators from across Slovenia who preserve tradition through their innovative products and flavours. The market stalls are filled with the scents of herbs, honey products, cured meats, fresh bread, and biscuits, while plates tempt visitors with hearty stews and other legend-inspired dishes. As they wander among stalls of wooden, clay, crocheted, and leather goods, visitors can discover the craftsmanship created by devoted local artisans.

Even before visitors step among the fragrant stalls, they are traditionally welcomed at the opening by the marching tunes of the Wind Band of Slovenske Konjice and a parade of little Georges and Daisies from local kindergartens and primary schools, who — together with the dragon — bring the legend to life and create a festive atmosphere. The town square is then filled with music by street musicians, singers, folk dancers, and other performers.
Meanwhile, visitors can learn about how the seed library operates, while children admire the exhibition of small pedigree animals, take part in creative workshops in the nearby town park, and test their skills in challenges organised by local associations. The town centre can also be experienced in a different way, either on a carriage ride or through the open-air exhibition, which this year marks the 880th anniversary of Konjice.

Jurjevanje takes place within the Rogla – Pohorje Tourist Destination, holder of the Slovenia Green label, and is designed as a sustainable event that celebrates nature through responsible organisation and encourages green experiences. The fair highlights local flavours, creativity, and natural materials, proudly bearing the Okusi Rogle quality label, established under the Izvorno slovensko model and awarded to the festival in 2024.
Spring in Slovenske Konjice will once again shine in creative, flavourful, and vibrant green colours. Let’s experience it together.
