Rog hiking trail
The Rog hiking trail is one of the most beautiful and well-known hiking trails in Kočevsko, taking hikers through the heart of the unspoilt nature of this secret and forested part of Slovenia. The trail’s fame is mainly due to the now traditional endurance hike “In the Bear’s Footsteps”, which attracts many nature and wilderness hiking enthusiasts to Kočevje every spring. However, beyond this event, the trail remains a hidden gem for those seeking solitude, deep forests, and an authentic connection with the wilderness.
Rog hiking trail – a hike in the wilderness
The Rog hiking trail winds through the vast forests of Kočevsko and offers hikers the chance to get in touch with authentic wilderness. The trail follows less frequented forest paths, past centuries-old trees and hidden natural landmarks that reveal the unspoilt beauty of the Kočevsko forests.

This trail is a paradise for nature lovers, as it meanders through areas where human intervention has been minimal, allowing hikers to experience the raw and undisturbed environment. Birdsong accompanies hikers along the way, and the scent of damp earth and pine needles fills the air. In the early morning or late evening, mist often drifts between the tree trunks, adding an air of mystery to the surroundings.
The entire route is around 64 kilometers long and connects some of the most important natural and historical points of Kočevsko. Among the most famous are the Rajhenau primeval forest, one of the oldest primeval forests in Europe, the Rog sawmill, where an important timber industry once operated, and Lake Kočevje, where the trailhead is located. Additionally, the trail passes through several other remarkable sites, including abandoned meadows that once served as pastures but are now being reclaimed by nature. These areas offer a glimpse into the delicate balance between human history and natural rewilding.
“In the Bear’s Footsteps” hike
Every year, the Rog hiking tail hosts an organised hike “In the Bear’s Footsteps”, which offers hikers a unique experience along the trail. The route of the trail is marked with a bear’s paw, which indicates another peculiarity of Kočevsko – the presence of brown bears, which are very abundant in these forests.
On an organised hike, hikers set off in the early hours of the morning and cover different sections of the trail – they can choose a shorter “half distance” trail of 36 km or the full trail of 64 km. Along the way, hikers can stop for refreshments and to help them continue their journey.

The “In the Bear’s Footsteps” hike along the Roška Trail attracts numerous lovers of wilderness hiking every year.
What to experience on the Rog hiking trail?
The Rog Hiking Trail is more than just a hiking route – it is a real journey through the history and nature of Kočevsko:
- hikers encounter primeval forest remnants, where nature lives according to its own laws, without human intervention,
- rich fauna: traces of wild animals can be spotted along the trail, and with a bit of luck hikers can also spot deer, chamois or even bears,
- historical sites: the trail passes by former abandoned Gottscheer villages, which still tell the stories of their former inhabitants. The remnants of old homesteads and churches, now covered in moss and ivy, serve as a poignant reminder of the region’s complex past.
- unspoilt nature: dense, vast forests, fresh air and the tranquillity of the landscape provide a real place to relax and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The stillness of the forest, broken only by the sounds of nature, offers a meditative experience that refreshes both body and mind.
Preparing for the hike
It is advisable to prepare well for hiking along the Rog hiking trail, especially if you choose to hike the entire 64-km distance. Due to the rugged terrain, suitable hiking footwear is essential, and it is also important to bring plenty of water, as you will not find running water on the trail, and a few snacks. As the trail passes through forests where the weather can change quickly, it is advisable to dress in layers. Hiking poles and a good rucksack are also recommended, so that you can pack the supplies and clothes you need for the trail.

Additionally, since some sections of the trail pass through remote areas with limited or no mobile signal, carrying a map or GPS device is a good idea. A basic first aid kit, including blister plasters and an emergency blanket, can be helpful for long-distance hikers.
For those who prefer a slower pace, sections of the trail can also be explored as day hikes thoughout the year, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the surroundings without committing to the full route.
The hike is suitable for all ages, but it does require some physical fitness, especially if you intend to walk the whole route in one day. Some of the shorter sections are also suitable for families with children. Regardless of your hiking experience, the Rog hiking trail provides an opportunity for everyone to reconnect with nature and discover the untouched wilderness of Kočevsko at their own pace.
After a day in the forest, treat yourself to a rest at Hostel Bearlog, a favorite stop among hikers, where the warmth of wood, the scent of pine, and little bear-themed details come together into an authentic Kočevje experience.
