Cycling enthusiasts now have the opportunity to explore the exhilarating Trans Dinarica cycling route traversing the rugged Dinaric Karst of the Western Balkans. Even before its official debut, this exceptional route has been honored with the “Best in Travel 2024” destination by Lonely Planet. It has also received acclaim from major media outlets such as CNN, Timeout, and Outside magazine. Commencing in Slovenia at the junction of the Alps and the Dinaric Alps, Trans Dinarica leads cyclists through striking karst landscapes into Croatia. From there, the route continues southeast to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia.

Start in mesmerizing Soča Valley and visit Slovenia Green destinations along the way

The Slovenian section of Trans Dinarica features four main and five secondary stages, guiding cyclists through some of Slovenia’s most beautiful and sustainable destinations. Riders can opt for the main routes or a combination of the additional secondary routes for a more varied adventure through this stunning region.

The first stage starts in the Tolmin, a picturesque town nestled between the Soča and Tolminka Rivers in the Alps. Renowned for its summer festivals and outdoor activities, Tolmin is an ideal launch point for your adventure. Be sure to visit the Tolmin Museum and the stunning Tolmin Gorges. The route then winds through the charming vineyards of Goriška Brda, ideal for wine tasting and savoring local prosciutto, which is air-dried by the burja wind. Here you can enjoy a variety of wines, including the Ribolla Gialla, along with Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia, Welschriesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc. The first stage ends in Nova Gorica, the European Capital of Culture for 2025.

The following day, you will ascend to a plateau above the Karst region, and stop at the 25-meter-high Monument of Peace and Observation Tower in Cerje and enjoy the views of the Soča and Vipava Valley and the Alps. For those inclined to explore further, a short detour leads to Štanjel, one of the most beautiful and oldest Karst settlements, renowned for its rich history, picturesque views, and lush gardens. The route, combining gravel and asphalt, will guide you to Sežana, where the Karst Living Museum and the Lipica stud farm are must-see attractions.

The final stage of the Slovenian part of Trans Dinarica continues towards Ilirska Bistrica, marking the end of your journey. Starting on gentle gravel roads, you’ll arrive at Matavun, the gateway to the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Slovenia’s most iconic attractions. From Matavun, remote and quiet gravel and asphalt roads will take you towards Rodik and the Rodik Mythical Park. After 23 kilometers, you will encounter the steepest gravel climb of the day, leading toward the village of Artviže. The ride continues from there on a long, narrow, scenic 28-kilometer asphalt road over the Brkini Hills. This peaceful route winds through charming, elevated villages, ultimately guiding you to the final destination, Ilirska Bistrica.

You can also choose the secondary route, which will take you to Postojna, home to two of Slovenia’s most renowned attractions: the stunning Postojna Cave and the medieval Predjama Castle, dramatically set on the edge of a karst cave. Just a few kilometers off the main road between Postojna and Ilirska Bistrica, the untamed wilderness awaits. Endless forests extend before you, creating a pristine landscape where you can sense the presence of bears, wolves, and lynx as you ride through.
