Vipava Harvest Festival – where wine tells a story, tradition runs deep, and celebration comes naturally

As summer slowly turns to autumn and the grapes in the vineyards reach their perfect ripeness, a special time begins in the Vipava Valley. Among the rows of vines, you can hear the rustling of leaves, conversations and laughter, while baskets filled with grapes slowly announce a new wine story.

Harvest time in the Vipava Valley is more than just work. It is a moment when knowledge and experience are passed from generation to generation, when families and friends come together and, at the end of the day, raise a glass of wine to celebrate. In Vipava, this time of year is marked by one of the biggest events in the valley – the Vipava Harvest Festival. It is an event that connects the tradition of winemaking, rich cultural heritage and joyful celebration.

The Vipava Grape Harvest brings wine, tradition, local flavours and entertainment together in the heart of Vipava.

Vipava comes alive

Every year in mid-September, Vipava transforms for a few days into a centre of events. The Main Square fills with music, visitors stroll between stalls of local producers and taste wines from local winemakers. The Vipava Harvest Festival is therefore not only a celebration of wine, but also a celebration of people – a meeting of generations, locals, winemakers, artists and visitors. We are especially happy to see more and more international guests joining the celebration every year.

The festival usually begins on Friday evening, when Vipava settles into a pleasant cultural atmosphere and the town slowly opens the doors to the celebration.

Local producers and artisans are an important part of the Vipava Grape Harvest programme.

Saturday – a day for sport, an evening for music

Saturday is usually more sport-oriented. Traditional events such as the cycling climb to Mount Nanos have been attracting cyclists and sports enthusiasts for many years, while various activities for children and families take place on the Main Square. The youngest visitors have the opportunity to discover different sports such as basketball, football, karate, badminton and more.

As the day turns into evening, the square transforms into a lively stage for music and socialising. The Vipava Harvest Festival is well known for its vibrant evening programme that attracts many visitors each year. Popular musicians and bands take the stage, while dancing, laughter and great energy fill the Main Square.

Folk performances are part of the Vipava Grape Harvest programme, bringing local tradition to the centre of Vipava.

Sunday – tradition and celebration

Sunday is the central day of the festival, with culture, tradition and community at its heart. The stage hosts performances by various dance groups and the local folklore group, celebrating the rich heritage of the area. A special moment of the day is the traditional blessing of the must, symbolically marking the beginning of a new wine vintage. The Mayor also traditionally announces the Mayor’s Sparkling Wine, an award for winemakers from the Municipality of Vipava.

In the shade of the trees in Lanthieri Park, a wine fair takes place where winemakers from across the Vipava Valley present their wines. Visitors have the opportunity to taste a wide variety of wines, with a special focus on indigenous Vipava grape varieties.

Alongside the wine fair, a farmers’ market offers the aromas of homemade delicacies. Visitors can taste local cheeses, jams and cured meat products, and discover handmade crafts and local products. Children enjoy theatre performances and creative workshops, while those looking for a bit more excitement can visit the amusement park.

During the festival, the doors also open to art. Various exhibitions introduce visitors to the creativity of different artists. Many guests also stop by Lanthieri Manor, where several hundred wines from Vipava Valley winemakers are gathered in one place. This year, visitors will also be able to explore a Leonardo da Vinci room and his visit to Vipava. In the evening, the celebration continues with music, dancing and a lively atmosphere.

A celebration that preserves heritage

Each year, the festival reminds us how important it is to preserve local culture and traditions. The vineyards surrounding Vipava are not just part of the landscape – they are part of the identity of the people who live here.
