I love summers in Brežice. I look forward to them every single year. The first sign that something everyone eagerly awaits is about to begin is always the same. One afternoon, the old town centre closes to traffic, and the street that usually belongs to cars suddenly becomes a space for people.

A stage slowly starts to take shape — first a few metal structures, then lights and speakers. Tables appear down the middle of the street, stalls begin to line the sides, and a quiet sense of anticipation settles in the air.

And that’s when you know — the Brežice City Promenade is back.

On opening night, as we head into town with friends, Brežice feels completely transformed. The street is full of people, everyone in a good mood. There’s laughter, conversation, the taste of local treats, and children running freely through it all.

At the Brežice Town Promenade, the main street becomes the heart of the town for a few evenings.

For a few evenings, the main street becomes the heart of the town

On the first day, we always arrive a little early, just to watch the space come to life. Families, friends and long-lost acquaintances begin to gather. Children laugh and play, adults exchange stories, and music drifts through the air, promising a lively evening ahead.

The first night always belongs to local performers, and there’s something especially moving about seeing familiar faces welcomed with such warmth. As the music fills the street, you can feel it unmistakably: summer in Brežice has begun.

The event brings locals together and creates space for socialising, conversation, and genuine connection.

Street cuisine and the scent of local flavours

If you ask me, the Brežice City Promenade has another defining layer: the irresistible aroma of great food. On opening day, the town centre comes alive with Kitchen on the Street, where local vendors from the Brežice Selected collective present their craft. Dishes are prepared right before your eyes, and every plate carries a story of its own.

As I wander from stall to stall, I realise it’s not just about the food. It’s a quiet celebration of local dedication and the pride woven into everything created here.

Nearby, there’s also a wine corner, where local winemakers present their wines. A glass of wine, music in the background, and a pleasant evening in town – it’s hard to imagine a better summer moment.

The little things that say a lot

Every year, the promenade surprises me with the smallest details. The kind you might overlook at first, yet they carry real meaning.

Take the glasses, for example. There’s no single-use plastic here. Vendors use reusable cups that visitors simply return. The result is far less waste and a noticeable reduction in plastic.

Then there’s the drinking fountain, shaped like a small water tower. At first glance, it feels like a charming feature, but it always reminds me of something we often take for granted: in Slovenia, clean drinking water is part of everyday life. You just refill your bottle and enjoy a refreshing sip.

Even when your child says, “I’m thirsty,” you don’t need to buy a new bottle. You can pick up a reusable one at the first stall and keep refilling it throughout the evening.

If you look a bit closer, you’ll notice something else. The waste bins around the town are decorated with flowers. Each one is clearly labelled for different types of waste, and small flags above them make them even more visible.

»The green patrol really impressed me.«

I’ll admit, at first I didn’t give much thought to where a wet wipe belongs. But as I stood by the recycling station, a friendly girl in a T-shirt labelled “green patrol” approached me.

When I tried to toss the wipe, she smiled and said, “That doesn’t go with paper. It’s mixed waste.” Then she shared something I hadn’t considered before. At the Brežice City Promenade, they aim to keep mixed waste below ten percent. Each evening, the waste is carefully weighed and tracked to see how well they’re doing.

That night, I placed the wipe in the correct bin. The next day, we made a small change at home. We packed regular tissues and a small bottle of water. Once moistened, they work almost like wet wipes, but can be disposed of as paper.

That’s when it struck me that the promenade is, in its own quiet way, a small school of sustainability.

Even the ashtrays tell a story

One of the more interesting details I noticed last year were the ashtrays. Every table has one, so cigarette butts don’t end up scattered on the ground. But there are also a special ashtrays, designed like a small voting box.

People drop in their cigarette butts and, at the same time, cast a vote in a light-hearted poll. A simple idea, yet one that quietly keeps the streets cleaner.

A space for creativity

One evening, I joined a Wine and Paint workshop. A local artist guided us through the process while we enjoyed a glass of local wine. By the end of the evening, I took home a painting that may not be a masterpiece, but is a lovely reminder of a summer night.

If you visit the promenade with children, the kids’ corner offers something new every day. They can create, draw, dance and take part in a variety of workshops.

One detail that stayed with me was the story behind the aprons used for painting. They’re made from old clothes sourced at the “Old school” reuse centre and then sewn by a local seamstress. Old garments are given a new life, while children learn about reuse through play. Even parts of the play area are made from materials that might otherwise have ended up as waste.

Local artisans and community groups

Each evening, local artisans also present their work at the promenade. Their stalls are filled with unique products, from handmade crafts to artistic pieces.

Organisers prioritise local providers, and stalls for members of the Brežice Selected brand are free of charge. This gives creators an opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience.

Local associations also perform regularly. Dance groups, sports clubs and other organisations present their activities and invite people to join them.

Many visitors arrive by bike, adding to the relaxed, local atmosphere. With plenty of bike racks available, it’s easy to leave the car behind and come for an evening stroll on two wheels.

»My favourite moment is when it gets dark. «

As evening slowly turns into night and the stage lights come on, I often pause and take it all in. On one side, the illuminated Water Tower; on the other, Brežice Castle. Together, they create a backdrop that gives the promenade its unmistakable charm.

The street fills with life. Families, friends, young and old. Some are dancing, others chatting, and some simply enjoying the music.

The Brežice City Promenade isn’t just an event. For a few days, it transforms the town into a place where people, music, food and atmosphere naturally come together. It’s also a place where sustainability isn’t a concept you talk about, but something you quietly live.

And when, next summer, the street closes again and the stage begins to rise, I’ll know that one of the things that makes Brežice so special is returning.
