For the third year in a row, the picturesque Karst Edge area invites nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to the popular series of sports and recreational experiences called Weekends on the Edge. The diverse landscape at the meeting point of the Karst region and Istria, with its mild climate, allows active exploration throughout the year, especially by bike or on foot. The nearby cliffs of Osapska stena and Mišja peč have long attracted climbers from all over the world.

Three consecutive weekends, between April 24 and May 10, bring a rich selection of activities for all generations and different levels of preparation. Cycling along scenic routes, climbing impressive rock faces, and hiking through karst meadows, hills, and picturesque villages are just part of the mostly free program that already forms the “classic repertoire” of Weekends on the Edge. Each event is complemented by numerous accompanying activities that create opportunities for relaxed socializing and an even more authentic experience of the area.

Kraški rob Visitor Center as the starting point

The starting point for many events is the Kraški rob Visitor Center, where visitors can obtain all the information they need for further exploration of the area – not only during the event but throughout the year. The center also offers a shop with local products and an e-bike charging station. From the panoramic terrace, visitors can admire the surrounding nature with a free telescope and take a closer look at the Osp Valley and nearby hamlets. The view from the center also stretches to the impressive viaduct and the route of the Divača-Koper second railway track.

A paradise for hiking and cycling

The Karst Edge area is crisscrossed with numerous hiking trails that lead through picturesque Istrian-Karst villages (Hrastovlje, Črni Kal, Osp, Podpeč and others) and up to scenic peaks. Among the most popular are the ascents to Lipnik (804 m), Kojnik (802 m), Kavčič (879 m), and the highest peak of Slovene Istria – Slavnik (1028 m).

The Karst Edge also offers many opportunities for exploration by bicycle – from scenic paths across karst meadows to stops at local providers where visitors can discover the authentic flavors and hospitality of the Istrian countryside.

Hidden gems of the Karst Edge

The Karst Edge also hides several truly unique spots that surprise visitors with their story and symbolism. Near Strmec Castle in Socerb lies one of the most unusual karst caves in Slovenia – Sveta jama (Holy Cave). This natural site of national importance, 231 meters long and 44 meters deep, hides a special feature inside: the only underground church in Slovenia, set within a natural karst cavity. Because of its unique combination of natural and spiritual heritage (including the legend of Saint Socerb), it represents a truly special place to visit.

Another remarkable point should not be missed. In the Hrastovlje Valley, near the spring of the Rižana River, stands the first stone labyrinth in Slovenia, built following the model of the famous labyrinth in the French city of Chartres. The labyrinth is made from stones from the Rižana River and carries a strong symbolic message. It consists of twelve circles and eleven paths that must be walked step by step – skipping circles is not allowed. Its design also includes the symbol of the cross and six roses, and the space is intended for calm reflection and inner balance.
