Novo Mesto is the heart of the Dolenjska region, home to a globally significant archaeological heritage, also known as the City of Situlas. With a rich history and tradition, the town was officially founded in 1365 on a bend of the Krka River, although people have lived in the Dolenjska region for at least three thousand years. Today, Novo Mesto is the only municipal city in the region and the true regional urban center of southeastern Slovenia. With its cultural significance and historical wealth, Novo Mesto is undoubtedly one of Slovenia’s most fascinating cities.
There, you will find the vast forests of the mystical Gorjanci Hills, where hiking trails and unexpected springs of pure, drinkable water delight visitors. The refreshing Krka River, which surrounds Otočec Castle—Slovenia’s only water castle—offers a picturesque setting. The town, shaped by the Krka, provides numerous outdoor activities immersed in greenery. Try stand-up paddleboarding on the river or admire the historic cityscape from the many cycling and hiking trails.
Surrounding the town are rolling vineyard-covered hills, where winemakers produce Cviček, the signature wine of Dolenjska, renowned for its lightness and freshness. Indulge in Dolenjska’s culinary delights, such as traditional štruklji, koline with matevž (pork dishes with mashed beans and potatoes), prune porridge, and dry-cured meats. Whether on foot or by bike, visit the welcoming vineyard cottages (zidanice) on Trška Gora, a hill with the highest concentration of zidanice in the world.
Complete your visit by experiencing one of the annual open-air festivals in the historic old town, such as Festival Cvička, Praznik Situl, Novomeško Poletje, and Jazzinty.
